Conflict

Battle or Skirmish?

Much confusion over the severity of the conflict derives from the size of the numerous engagements fought throughout the war. The WoTRWiki divides the events generally between Engagements (events focused on a limited geographic area and time) and the larger groups of Operations these events usually fall into. These distinctions are further described below, and an overview of the most well-known events can be found in the Major Campaigns section below. More detailed events can be found at the state, county, and municipality page levels.

Engagements

Many early engagements were called "battles" despite total combatants numbering only a few hundred, as both sides expected a short, decisive series of battles before the war ended. As it became clear the war would continue much longer into the future, engagements with anywhere from a handful of troops to several hundred soldiers would become skirmishes; engagements with larger armies and several thousands of troops became battles.

Dyer further complicates this distinction by attributing other military terms to skirmishes or battles, based on how the commanders originally reported the engagement to their superiors. There is no real difference in terms of definition, but certain terms are more appropriate given the context of the engagement:

  • Actions, Combats, and Engagements are often mentioned generally; they vary in size and casualty rate
  • Battles usually involve large numbers of participants and high casualties
  • Captures refer to the capture of specific objectives, usually a municipality
    • Individual assaults or attacks on enemy positions are generally made within larger battles, but only involve a sub-section of the engaging forces
  • Skirmishes usually involve small numbers of participants and low casualties
  • Bombardments are often one-sided artillery attacks on an enemy position, both on land and at sea - enemy positions may return fire but primarily as a defensive maneuver
  • Riots involve military forces engaging with armed (or unarmed) civilians in larger metropolitan areas, often in response to particular war policies such as the draft
  • Miscellaneous affairs are used to group other actions that do not necessarily fall into these categories - Dyer has used this attribution for small, bloodless disturbances or military-related oddities

The WoTRWiki has recorded over 808 individual engagements in the War of the Rebellion - click HERE to access an alphabetical list of these engagements

Operations

In addition to individual engagements, units were often sent on longer term missions over a larger area of territory for various reasons. Engagements usually occurred during the course of these missions. These distinctions are fairly straightforward, as often they served a particular purpose:

  • Campaigns are generally the largest operations with the most troops, targeting a specific area or army with specific sub-goals as the situation changes, though there is still some variation in size and scope
  • General operations include a wide variety of military activities
  • Reconnaissances to or from a position

OPERATIONS

  • Expeditions to or from a position
  • Scouts to or from a position
  • Advance to/retreat from a position
  • Bloodless troop demonstrations

Units Serving in the United States Navy

Unlike the armies, soldiers who enlisted to serve in the United States Navy served aboard vessels with men from the various states. Sailors often changed ships and various ships performed detached duties from their squadrons, so no firm personnel lists currently exist for these vessels. The lists of sailors were published by the individual states, and the rosters presented here reflect those original publications.
