- Multiple units engage near Seven Pines and Fair Oaks in Henrico County, Virginia from May 31-June 1, 1862. Union troops edge closer to Richmond but Confederate forces hold them at bay in the largest battle in the Eastern Theater at this time in the war. The more aggressive Robert E. Lee is promoted to leader of all Confederate forces, and begins preparations to drive the Union away from Richmond and back down the Peninsula.
