The Carolinas Campaign was a series of battles fought through South and North Carolina from January 1-April 26, 1865. Battered Confederate forces under Joseph E. Johnston continue to dwindle as the Union forces under Major General William Sherman drive north. In what ultimately becomes the last campaign in the Eastern Theater, Confederate forces surrender the second largest concentration of forces and territory under Confederate control. Hostilities continue further to the west.
