The Red River Campaign or Red River Expedition comprised a series of battles fought along the Red River in Louisiana during the American Civil War from March 10-May 22, 1864. Union Major General Nathaniel Banks moves against Confederate General E. Kirby Smith in an attempt to establish a Union presence in Texas to discourage French movement along the Mexican border. Though Union troops outnumber Confederates by at least two to one at all times during the campaign, mismanagement and poor communication again hamper Union progress.
