The Peninsula Campaign (also referred to as the Peninsular Campaign) was a major Union operation launched in southeastern Virginia from March 17-September 2, 1862. It was the first large-scale offensive in the Eastern Theater, wherein Union Major General George B. McClellan attempted a combined land and naval offensive intended to capture the Confederate Capital at Richmond. McClellan was initially successful against the cautious General Joseph E. Johnston, but the emergence of General Robert E. Lee as an ambitious General reversed Confederate forces at the end of the campaign.
