Department of the Ohio

The Department of the Ohio was a Union Military Department originally constituted on May 3, 1861 to consist of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. The Department was expanded to include other nearby states before its contents were split between the Department of Mississippi and the Western Department. It was recreated on August 19, 1862 with many of the original states and several others, and was annexed by the Department of the Cumberland on January 17, 1865.

  • Begin: May 3, 1861 (Ohio, Indiana, Illinois)
    • West Virginia and Pennsylvania (as far as the Kanawha and Greenbriar Rivers) added
    • June 6, 1861: Missouri added
    • July 3, 1861: Illinois transferred to Western Department
  • September 19, 1861: Boundaries changed (Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky within 15 miles of Cincinnati)
    • November 9, 1861: Michigan added
    • Kentucky, east of the Cumberland River, added
  • End: March 11, 1862 (Merged into Mountain Department and Department of Mississippi)
  • Recreated: August 19, 1862 (Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Kentucky east of the Tennessee River and including the Cumberland Gap)
  • End: January 17, 1865 (Annexed by the Department of the Cumberland)
