Lucius Fairchild

Lucius Fairchild was a Colonel in the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry.

Antebellum

  • Nickname "Lush"
  • "Man of reputation in the pre-war Wisconsin Militia movement"[1]
  • Left Prairieville Academy (now Carroll University, Waukesha) after one semester, rumored his father couldn't pay tuition costs
  • Age 17 went to California to participate in Gold Rush
  • Returned in 1855 with some wealth, though perhaps more as a result of his merchandising skills and careful selection of business partners
  • Worked briefly for Madison and Watertown Railroad (father owned an interest)
  • Active social life
  • 1860 - Admitted to bar, elected to clerk of Dane County,
  • Officer of Governor's Guard, Madison militia group, drilled with E. Elmer Ellsworth before his fame with U.S. Zouave Cadets in Chicago
  • Enlisted from Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin
