2nd Wisconsin Infantry

The 2nd Wisconsin Infantry was organized in May of 1861 and officially mustered into United States service on June 11, 1861. It consisted of men primarily recruited from Fox Lake, Janesville, La Crosse, Madison, Milwaukee, Mineral Point, Oshkosh, Portage, Racine, and parts of greater Grant County.

The 2nd Wisconsin Infantry was organized at Madison, Wisconsin in May of 1861 for a 90 day term of service. It was mustered into Federal Service on June 11, 1861 with the following roster of officers:

The Bull Run Campaign

  • Attached to Sherman's Brigade, Tyler's Division, McDowell's Army of Northeast Virginia, to August, 1861
  • July 15 - By 1:00 p.m., the regiment marched out to the Fairfax road to join in brigade formation to began the Advance on Manassas
  • Marched a dozen miles through Falls Church and Vienna, halted for the night
  • July 16 - Marched 8 miles through Fairfax Court House and Germantown, Virginia until they arrived at Warrenton Pike, halted 3 miles outside of Centreville, Fairfax County, Virginia
  • July 17 - ?
  • July 18 - Marched toward Centreville, halted, ordered around noon to the support of troops engaged near Blackburn's Ford
    • The same day, General Tyler takes his Division on a reconnaissance to Blackburn's Ford, where rebels contest the Union advance
    • A small skirmish soon became the Battle of Blackburn's Ford
    • Sherman's brigade held in reserve, shell lands in Company B wounding 3 and killing Myron Gardner[4]
  • Regiment returned to camp and bivouacked, held at the ready for 3 days
  • July 21, 1861 - Battle of (I) Bull Run
    • At 2:00 a.m., the regiment awoke and marched to the Stone Bridge along the Warrenton Pike
    • Sherman's brigade deployed on the right side of the Pike, Schencks' deployed on the left, intent is to create a diversion for the rest of the army to get around the left flank
    • The Battle of (I) Bull Run commences
    • Around 11:00 a.m., Sherman's Brigade crosses the bridge and enters the battle
      • BATTLE EVENTS
        • Confederate battery waving Union flag
        • Crossed field to Matthew Hill
        • Artillery battle
        • 2nd Infantry and (I) 13th New York Infantry ordered to take Henry Hill
        • 2nd stays longer, retreats farther
        • 38th New York and 69th New York advance to capture guns
        • Union regiments' friendly firing into the 2nd as they retreat
        • Robert S. Stephenson saves the colors in a Confederate cavalry charge[5]
        • Sherman tries to form a hollow square during the retreat, unsuccessful
        • Henry Peck rides past the entire unit on horseback
        • Great stampede of wagons/buggies/artillery, etc running away
        • James M. Lewis, the regimental surgeon, is captured at the hospital near the battle ground
        • Regiment regroups at Centerville, and marches to Camp Peck
  • On July 22, most of regiment had regrouped at old camp
  • On July 23, moved to Fort Corcoran and ordered to garrison and defend

RESULTS

  • Comparison of casualties from different sources + list
  • Quiner: 19 Killed / 114 Wounded / 69 Prisoners, including wounded. Several would die in captivity[6]
  • 2 days after battle 785 present/accounted for - Sherman submits 23 killed, 65 wounded 23 missing and believed to be prisoners
  • Alan D. Gaff[7] study believes real casualties to be 18 killed, 76 wounded, 50 wounded/prisoners, 26 unwounded prisoners

  • Fort Corcoran, Division of the Potomac, to October, 1861
  • Visited by President Lincoln, Secretary Seward, and Governor Randall
  • STAFF CHANGES
  • August 27, transferred to provisional brigade with 5th Wisconsin Infantry, 6th Wisconsin Infantry, and 19th Indiana Infantry - Commanded by Rufus King
  • Regiment was transferred to General King's brigade and joined it on Meridian Hill on July 25
  • Duty at Fort Corcoran, Defenses of Washington, D.C., until August 27
  • Sent over the Potomac River at Chain bridge to build fortifications and perform picket duty in "early September"
    • Reconnaissance to Lewinsville, Va., September 25, 1861
    • Rejoined the brigade at Camp Lyon on October 1

  • King's Brigade, McDowell's Division, Army of the Potomac, to March, 1862
  • Joined brigade on October 1st, joined by the 6th Wisconsin Infantry on October 2nd to form the Iron Brigade

CAMP TILLINGHAST, VA., DEC. 8, 1861

Co. K of this regiment having been detached for Artillery duty by Special Orders No. 172, Headquarters Army of the Potomac, dated Dec. 7, 1861, said Company will be relieved from further duty in the 2d Regiment Wis. Vols. at 8:30 o'clock to-morrow morning.

Lieut. Hunt, in command of said Company, will direct the removal of the same, and everything pertaining to it, and he will report his company for Artillery duty in obedience to orders received from Brig. Gen'l William F. Barry, Chief of Artillery.

HEADQUARTERS 2D WIS INFANTRY VOLS.
CAMP TILLINGHAST, VA., DEC. 8, 1861

Co. K of this regiment having been detached for Artillery duty by Special Orders No. 172, Headquarters Army of the Potomac, dated Dec. 7, 1861, said Company will be relieved from further duty in the 2d Regiment Wis. Vols. at 8:30 o'clock to-morrow morning.

Lieut. Hunt, in command of said Company, will direct the removal of the same, and everything pertaining to it, and he will report his company for Artillery duty in obedience to orders received from Brig. Gen'l William F. Barry, Chief of Artillery.
