Regimental History and Service Record

Note: Captain J C Starkweather, Milwaukee Light Guards, was appointed colonel, 1st Wisconsin Infantry, on 20 April, 1861, and colonel, reorganised the 1st Wisconsin Infantry, on 21 August, 1861. Lieutenant Colonel C L Harris, 1st Wisconsin Infantry, was appointed colonel, 11th Wisconsin Infantry, on 2 September, 1861, and Major D H Lane, 1st Wisconsin Infantry, was appointed colonel, 10th Wisconsin Infantry, on 12 September, 1861.

Madison, Dane County, to Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, Companies E & K, 25 April, 1861: The Governor's Guards (80) and the Madison Guards (80) were stationed at Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin, on 24 April, 1861, and arrived by the Milwaukee & Mississippi Railroad at Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, in the afternoon on 25 April, 1861.

Fond du Lac, Fond du Lac County, to Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, Company I, 2 May, 1861: The Fond Du Lac Badger Boys arrived by the La Crosse & Milwaukee Rairoad at Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, on 2 May, 1861.

Note: The Fond du Lac Badger Boys was assigned to the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry by Executive Office, Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin, on 23 April, 1861, and to the 1st Wisconsin Infantry by General Orders No.5, Headquarters, 1st Wisconsin State Active Militia, Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, on 30 April, 1861 (See the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry).

Old State Agricultural Society Fairgrounds, on Spring Street, west of Twelfth Street, Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, to Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, 9-12 June, 1861: The 1st Wisconsin Infantry (745) was ordered to proceed by the Chicago & Milwaukee Railroad to Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, at 2 PM on 9 June, 1861, dated 7 June, 1861, and arrived at Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio, at 11.20 AM on 10 June, 1861. The regiment was ordered to proceed by the Cleveland & Toledo Railroad to Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, at 1.30 PM the same day and arrived at 7 PM on 10 June, 1861. The regiment was ordered to proceed by the Cleveland & Pittsburgh Railroad to Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, at 11.30 PM the same day and arrived at 9 AM on 11 June, 1861. The 1st Wisconsin Infantry arrived by the Pennsylvania Railroad at Lewistown, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, at 7 PM the same day and at Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, at 12 AM on 12 June, 1861. The regiment arrived by the Cumberland Valley Railroad at Camp McClure, on the grounds of A K McClure, on the Philadelphia Turnpike, one mile northeast of Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, at 5 AM the same day and was accompanied by Brevet Major General & Brigadier General G Cadwalader, Pennsylvania Volunteers.

Note: The 1st Wisconsin Infantry was assigned to the Fifth Brigade, Army of Pennsylvania, under the command of Brigadier General J S Negley, Pennsylvania Volunteers, by Special Orders No.68, Paragraph II, Headquarters, Department of Pennsylvania, Chambersburg, Franklin County, Maryland, on 11 June, 1861 (See the Fifth Brigade, Second Division, Army of Pennsylvania).

Grounds of A K McClure, on the Philadelphia Turnpike, one mile northeast of Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, to Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland, 16 June, 1861: The 1st Wisconsin Infantry was ordered to proceed by the Franklin Railroad to Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland, at 12 PM on 16 June, 1861, and arrived at Camp Negley, on the Greencastle & Willaimsport Turnpike, one mile southwest of Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland, at 2 PM the same day.

Williamsport & Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland, 18 June, 1861: The 1st Wisconsin Infantry was ordered to proceed by the Greencastle & Williamsport Turnpike to Williamsport, Washington County, Maryland, at 4 AM on 18 June, 1861, and arrived at 7 AM the same day. The regiment arrived by the Greencastle & Williamsport Turnpike, one mile southwest of Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland, in the evening on 18 June, 1861.

Note: The 1st Wisconsin Infantry was assigned to the Sixth Brigade, Second Division, Army of Pennsylvania, under the command of Colonel J J Abercrombie, 7th United States Infantry, by Special Orders No.76, Paragraph IV, Headquarters, Department of Pennsylvania, Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland, on 20 June, 1861.

Greencastle & Williamsport Turnpike, one mile southwest of Hagerstown to Downsville, Washington County, Maryland, 29 June, 1861: The 1st Wisconsin Infantry was ordered to Downsville, Washington County, Maryland, in the morning on 29 June, 1861.

Downsville to Williamsport, Washington County, Maryland, 1 July, 1861: The 1st Wisconsin Infantry was ordered to Williamsport, Washington County, Maryland, at 12 AM on 1 July, 1861.

Skirmish at Falling Waters or Hoke Run, one mile south of Hainesville, Berkeley County, Virginia, 2 July, 1861: The 1st Wisconsin Infantry was ordered to proceed across the Potomac River at Lemon's Ferry, west of Williamsport, Washington County, Maryland, to Martinsburg, Berkeley County, Virginia, at 3 AM on 2 July, 1861, and arrived at W Porterfield's Farm, on the Martinsburg & Williamsport Turnpike, one and a half miles southwest of Falling Waters, Berkeley County, Virginia, at 7 AM the same day. The regiment was engaged in a skirmish at Falling Waters or Hoke Run, one mile south of Hainesville, Berkeley County, Virginia, at 9 AM on 2 July, 1861, and arrived at Hoke Run, one mile south of Hainesville, Berkeley County, Virginia, in the evening the same day.

Hoke Run, one mile south of Hainesville, to Martinsburg, Berkeley County, Virginia, 3 July, 1861: The 1st Wisconsin Infantry was ordered to proceed by the Martinsburg & Williamsport Turnpike to Martinsburg, Berkeley County, Virginia, at 10 AM on 3 July, 1861, and arrived at 12 PM the same day.

Martinsburg, Berkeley County, Virginia, & Williamsport, Washington County, Maryland, 4-5 July, 1861: The 1st Wisconsin Infantry was ordered to proceed by the Martinsburg & Williamsport Turnpike to Williamsport, Washington County, Maryland, at 3 AM on 4 July, 1861, and was accompanied by the 11th Pennsylvania Infantry. The regiment arrived at Martinsburg, Berkeley County, Virginia, in the morning on 5 July, 1861.

Note: Colonels P Jarrett and J C Starkweather, 11th Pennsylvania Infantry and 1st Wisconsin Infantry, respectively, were stationed at Hagerstown, washington County, Maryland, on 4 July, 1861, and the 11th Pennsylvania Infantry and the 1st Wisconsin Infantry were assigned to guard ordnance and commissary wagons between Williamsport, Washington County, Maryland, and Martinsburg, Berkeley County, Virginia, on 5 July, 1861.

Martinsburg, Berkeley County, to Charlestown, Jefferson County, Virginia, 15-17 July, 1861: The 1st Wisconsin Infantry was ordered to Bunker Hill, Berkeley County, Virginia, in the morning on 15 July, 1861, and arrived in the vicinity of Bunker Hill, Berkeley County, Virginia, at 4 PM the same day. The regiment was ordered to Charlestown, Jefferson County, Virginia, at 9 AM on 17 July, 1861, and arrived via Middleway or Smithfield, Jefferson County, Virginia, at 9 PM the same day.

Harpers Ferry, Jefferson County, Virginia, to Sandy Hook, Washingtin County, Maryland, 23 July, 1861: The 1st Wisconsin Infantry was ordered across the Potomac River at Harpers Ferry, Jefferson County, Virginia, to Sandy Hook, Washingtin County, Maryland, in the morning on 23 July, 1861, and was stationed at Camp Starkweather, in the vicinity of Sandy Hook, Washingtin County, Maryland, between 23 and 25 July, 1861.

Vicinity of Sandy Hook, Washingtin County, Maryland, to the Poolesville Road, two miles west of Conrad's Ferry, on the Potomac River, four & a half miles west of Poolesville, Montgomery County, Maryland, 25 July, 1861: The 1st Wisconsin Infantry arrived two miles west of Conrad's Ferry, on the Potomac River, four and a half miles west of Poolesville, Montgomery County, Maryland, in the evening on 25 July, 1861, and Companies B and I at the Monocacy Aqueduct, at the mouth of the Monocacy River, half a mile north of Spink's Ferry, on the Potomac River, Frederick County, Maryland; Companies C, G, and H were stationed at Conrad's Ferry, on the Potomac River, four and a half miles west of Poolesville, Montgomery County, Maryland; Companies E and F at Edward's Ferry, on the Potomac River, three and a half miles southwest of Poolesville, Montgomery County, Maryland; and Companies A, K, and D, on the Poolesville Road, two miles west of Conrad's Ferry, on the Potomac River, four and a half miles west of Poolesville, Montgomery County, Maryland, between 23 and 25 July, 1861.
