The Roster of Wisconsin Volunteers, War of the Rebellion, 1861-1865, is a full register of the soldiers who fought in units raised by the state of Wisconsin in the Civil War.

Original Publication

On April 15, 1885 a bill was approved by Governor Jeremiah M. Rusk and published as chapter 244, Laws of 1885 to preserve records of Wisconsin soldiers, which had started to deteriorate because of overuse. During this time, there was an increased need for verification of military history for the purposes of government pension programs, Grand Army of the Republic membership, etc. The Roster of Wisconsin Volunteers, War of the Rebellion, 1861-1865 was compiled by Adjutant General Chandler P. Chapman, published in two volumes in 1886, and an index to the roster was prepared by the office of the Adjutant General between 1895 and 1899 and published in 1914. These volumes serve as indexes to the Regimental and Descriptive Rolls of Wisconsin Soldiers who served in the Civil War, also known as the Red & Blue Books or Compiled Service Records.
