War Career
- April 29, 1861 - Appointed Lieutenant Colonel
- June 11, 1861 - Mustered into federal service with unit
- Drilled soldiers of the 2nd Wisconsin using manual approved by General Scott
- Presented with a black horse named "Wild Bill," known for its speed by the citizens of Madison and Dane County
- Promoted to field command of the 2nd Wisconsin when Squire Park Coon was named to personal staff of William Tecumseh Sherman
- July 29, 1861 - Resigned commission
