Squire Park Coon was a Colonel in the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry.

Antebellum

  • Native of New York
  • Educated at Norwich University in Vermont
  • Prominent and highly regarded Milwaukee lawyer and former Attorney General
  • Commissioned from Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin
    • No real military knowledge or experience, widely seen as a political appointment by Governor Randall

War Career

  • April 24, 1861 - Received commission as Colonel
  • June 11, 1861 - Mustered into federal service with unit
  • Named the Madison mustering location "Camp Randall" after his appointment
  • Named to personal staff of William Tecumseh Sherman
  • July 31, 1861 - Resigned commission

Post-War Career

  • Died on October 12, 1883 in Milwaukee.[1]
  • Buried at Section 26, Forest Home Cemetery, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
