Antebellum
- Lived in Hartford, Connecticut
- Enlisted August 5, 1848 at age 14 as a recruit in the general services at New York, New York
- Assigned to company of "Music Boys" stationed at Principal Depot, Fort Columbus, New York
- Discharged October 9, 1848 by Civil Authority for being too young
- Moved to Potosi, Grant County, Wisconsin
- Worked as fisherman with his brothers before war
- Married Louisa Daniels on April 20, 1861
- Age 27 at the time of enlistment
- Enlisted from Potosi, Grant County, Wisconsin
War Career
- April 23, 1861 - Enlisted in the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry / Company C
- April 23 - Promoted 2nd Lieutenant
- June 11, 1861 - Mustered into federal service with unit
- Wounded and taken prisoner in action at the
Battle of Bull Run, Virginia
- Struck by a musket ball in left calf
- Spent 6 months in "Tobacco House" prisons in Richmond, Virginia
- "while in prison had chronic diarrhea and Typhoid Fever, affected throat and lungs, piles, chronic rheumatism and wound by gunshot through left leg" - Pension application, 1879
- January 26, 1862 - Paroled and exchanged for Lieutenant Julian G. Moore of the 7th North Carolina Infantry
- February 17, 1862 - Promoted to 1st Lieutenant
- March 3, 1863 - Resigned commission[1] for disability - "He was honorably discharged on tender of resignation Jan'y 3, 1863, on order from Head Qtrs, but papers on which discharge was based are not on file. No medical certificate on file."
- January 2, 1864 - Re-enlisted in the 7th Wisconsin Infantry / Company F
- December 14, 1864 - Promoted to Sergeant Major
- Participated in the Grand Review with the regiment
- July 3, 1865 - Mustered out of federal service
Postwar Career
- Returned to Potosi, Wisconsin
- Lived in Wolf Creek, Wisconsin in 1869
- Moved to Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, Tennessee
- Applied for government pension 1879, apparently denied
- Moved to Joy, Minnesota in 1883
- Moved to Elma, Washington in 1902
- Worked as farmer, miner, storekeeper, and census taker
- Died on 1919, at 85 years old
- Buried in IOOF Cemetery in Elma, WA
