- Enlisted on April 23, 1861 in the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry / Company F
- Corporal
- Wounded and taken prisoner at the Battle of (I) Bull Run
- Shot in throat, forced to lay on his front for the blood to drain, and was thought dead[1]
- Captured, sent to Libby prison
- Paroled while wounded
- Discharged on May 5, 1862 to accept cadetship in West Point
- Appointed by president Lincoln, him and Charles King, son of Rufus King are only two Wisconsin soldiers to receive this commission
