Civil War Veteran, Wounded at Gettysburg, Dies at His Home Here.
Lewis M. Baker, age 81 years and 6 months, who had lived in Salem about 40 years, died at his home here yesterday. He was born in Virginia, February 15, 1837, and was a veteran of the Civil war, having enlisted in Company B, Second regiment of Wisconsin infantry, at the beginning of the war and served until the battle of Gettysburg in 1863 where he received a wound which rendered him unfit for further service, and he was given an honorable discharge from the army.
For more than a year after the battle of Gettysburg Mr. Lewis was compelled to stay in a hospital, and throughout the remainder of his life he was bothered by the wound.
Mr. Baker was a charter member of Sedgwick post, G.A.R., of Salem, and for some years was a regular attendant at its meetings. He leaves a wife and five children, namely, Mrs. Ella Baker, Chester C. Baker and Frank A. Baker, all of Salem, and Fred O. Baker and Edward D. Baker of Spokane. Funeral services will be held from the chapel of Webb & Clough tomorrow forenoon at 10 o'clock. A large number of G.A.R. members will attend.
