Antebellum
- Born in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio in 1833
- Moved to Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin with his family in 1842
- Graduate of U.S. Military Academy at West Point
- Earned straps in 1854, assigned to 7th United States Infantry and served at Sante Fe, Pike's Peak, and 3 years at Fort Gibson, Indian Territory
- 1857 - married daughter of slave-owning judge from Arkansas
- 1859 - resigned army commission to return to Wisconsin to read law
- 1861 - passed bar exam
- Democrat, controversy over southern wife
- Commissioned from Beloit, Rock County, Wisconsin
War Career
- August 3, 1861 - Received commission
- ? - Mustered into federal service
Death and Burial
- August 28, 1862 - Killed in action at the
Engagement at Gainesville, Virginia
Family
- Father-in-law was strongly pro-union, moved family north when the war started
