The Battle of (I) Fredericksburg took place December 11-15, 1862 in and around the city of Fredericksburg, Virginia. Union Major General Ambrose Everett Burnside, commanding the Army of the Potomac in three "Grand Divisions," crossed the Rappahannock River via pontoon bridges, and captured the city on December 11 and 12. On December 13, he proceded to launch a series of attacks against a fortified stone wall at the base of Marye's Heights, where Confederate troops inflicted more than twice as many casualties than they received and drove back the divisions of Union Major Generals William B. Franklin, Sumner, and Joseph Hooker.
