Regimental History and Service Record

Organized at Madison, Wis., April 9, 1864. Left State for Washington, D.C., April 28 (Cos. "A" to "F"). Two more Companies, "H" and "I," loin at Maryland Heights May 17. Duty at Washington, D.C., until May 30. Moved to White House, Va, May 30-June 1, and guard duty there until June 10. Guard supply train to Cold Harbor June 10. Attached to Casey's Brigade, 22nd Army Corps, to June, 1864. 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, 9th Army Corps, Army of the Potomac, to September, 1864, 1st Brigade, 1st Division, 9th Army Corps, to July, 1865.

SERVICE.--Movement across James River to Petersburg, Va., June 12-15. Assaults on Petersburg June 16-18. Siege of Petersburg June 16, 1864, to April 2, 1865. Mine Explosion, Petersburg, July 30, 1864. Weldon Railroad August 18-21. Poplar Springs Church September 29-October 2. Boydton Plank Road, Hatcher's Run, October 27-28. Fort Stedman, Petersburg, March 25, 1865. Appomattox Campaign March 28-April 9. Assault on and fall of Petersburg April 2. Occupation of Petersburg April 3. Pursuit of Lee April 3-9. Moved to Washington, D.C., April 21-24. Grand Review May 23. Provost duty at Washington and Alexandria until July. Mustered out July 26, 1865.

Regiment lost during service 7 Officers and 149 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 2 Officers and 89 Enlisted men by disease. Total 247.
