ADJUTANT GENERAL'S REPORT.

-----------

INDIANA HAS SENT TO THE FIELD more than two hundred thousand troops, the majority being for three years' service. In addition, fifty thousand State Militia have been called into active service, for brief perioeds, during the war, to protect our southern border from invasion and rebel raids. Seventeen thousand one hundred and fourteen military commissions have been issued since the outbreaking of the rebellion. These statistics are referenced to merely by way of apology for any inaccuracies that may have unavoidably, found their way into this volume. Officers who have been misrepresented in any way, or whose names have been misspelled, will confer a favor by reporting the facts, so that proper corrections may be made in the succeeding volume.

THE HISTORICAL SKETCHES, inserted after the regimental and company Rosters, in many cases may fall far short of doing full justice to the officers and the men concerned; yet they are quite as complete as the data at hand enabled them to be made. In preparing these sketches a brief outlines has only been attempted, as the materials at command, and the limited space allotted would permit nothing more.

THE FIRST VOLUME will contain the report, proper, of the Adjutant General, with such documents and orders as it may be important to preserve, and full statistics of the troops raised, deaths, discharges, transfers, promotions, and desertions, and other such matters relating to the GREAT STRUGGLE as may be worthy of a permanent record. The manuscript for this volume is mostly prepared, but its publication will, necessarily, have to be deffered until the regiments remaining in service are mustered out.

THE THIRD VOLUME, completing the rosters of officers, is now being printed, in a style uniform with this.

SUBSEQUENT VOLUMES, containing the names of all non-commissioned officers and privates, their regiments and companies, residences, dates of enlistment, dates of muster, deaths, discharges, transfers, promotions, etc., as shown by the official rolls, are in active preparation, and will be published as soon as possible.

W.H.H. TERRELL,
Adjutant General, Indiana.

ADJUTANT GENERAL'S OFFICE, Indianapolis, Nov. 1865.
