Regimental History and Service Record

Organized at Camp Butler, II1., and mustered in September 10, 1862. Moved to Jackson, Tenn., October 6-9, 1862, and duty there until November 2. Attached to 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, Right Wing 13th Army Corps (Old), Dept. of the Tennessee, to December, 1862. 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, 17th Army Corps, Army of the Tennessee to April, 1864. Maltby's Brigade, District of Vicksburg, Miss., to October, 1864. 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, 19th Army Corps, Dept. of the Gulf, October, 1864. Maltby's Brigade, District of Vicksburg, Miss., to February, 1865. 3rd Brigade, 3rd Division, 16th Army Corps (New), Military Division West Mississippi, to August, 1865.

SERVICE.--Grant's Central Mississippi Campaign. Operations on the Mississippi Central R. R. to the Tallahatchie and Yocknapatafa Rivers November, 1862, to January, 1863. Reconnaissance from LaGrange November 8-9, 1862. Moved to Memphis, Tenn., January 12-21, 1863; thence to Lake Providence, La, February 21. and to Milliken's Bend, La., April 17. Movement on Bruinsburg and turning Grand Gulf April 25-30.

Expedition toward Canton October 14-20. Bogue Chitto Creek October 17. At Big Black November 7, 1863, to February, 1864. (Regiment won the "Excelsior Prize Banner," tendered by Gen. M.D. Leggett, Commanding the Division, to the best drilled and finest Regiment in the Division. Awarded by the unanimous vote of the committee, and presented to the Regiment by Gen. J. B. McPherson January 23, 1864, and carried by the Regiment until April 5, 1864, when, through reassignment outside the Division, it was turned over to the Division Commander,)

Clinton July 4. Clinton and Jackson July 7. Movement to Memphis and return October 13-26. Moved to New Orleans, La., February 25-27, 1865; thence to Dauphin Island, Ala.. March 11-16. Canby's Campaign against Mobile, Ala., and its defenses March 17-April 12. Siege of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely March 26-April 9. Capture of Mobile April 12. March to Montgomery April 13-25. and Provost duty there until July 16. Moved to Vicksburg, Miss.; thence to Chicago, Ill., July 16-August 3. Mustered out at Vicksburg, Miss.. July 28, and discharged at Chicago, I11., August 16, 1865.
