- After the war, he lived in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa
- June 11, 1878 - Died
- Buried at Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa
- After William died, his wife applied for a pension from Iowa (Application #326,817)
