Western Department

Jump to navigationJump to searchThe Western Department was a Union Military Department constituted on July 3, 1861. It consisted of Illinois and the states and territories between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains (including New Mexico). Its contents were split and merged into the Department of Missouri, the Department of Kansas, and the Department of New Mexico on November 9, 1861.
