Antebellum
- July 26, 1825 - Born in Andover, Allegheny County, New York
- Student at Oberlin College in Ohio, left school to take a job
- Worked for Chicago newspaper
- 1847: moved with family to Dodgeville in the Wisconsin Territory
- Worked as mine surveyor, schoolteacher, Clerk of Dane County Board
- Moved to Mineral Point, Wisconsin in 1857
- Elected to Wisconsin Legislature
- Named Chief Clerk of the U.S. Land Office at Madison
- Became a member of Governor's Guard with Lucius Fairchild, served as Lieutenant
- Left at start of war to take a Captain's Commission in newly formed Miner's Guard Company at Mineral Point
- Enlisted from Mineral Point, Iowa County, Wisconsin
War Career
- April 26, 1861 - Enlisted in the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry / Company I
- April 27, 1861 - Promoted to Captain of that company
- June 11, 1861 - Mustered into federal service with unit
- August 22, 1861 - Promoted to Major
- August 28, 1862 - Wounded in action at the
Engagement at Gainesville, Virginia
- August 30, 1862 - Promoted Lieutenant Colonel
- September 17, 1862 - Wounded in action at the
Battle of Antietam, Maryland
- January 26, 1863[1] - Promoted to Colonel of the (I) 5th Wisconsin Infantry
- November 7, 1863 - Wounded in action at Rappahannock Station
- September 5, 1864[2] - Promoted to Colonel of the (II) 5th Wisconsin Infantry
- March 13, 1865 - Promoted to Brevet-Brigadier General for meritorious services during the war
- June 20, 1865 - Mustered out of federal service
Post-War Career
- After the war, he lived in Oshkosh, Winnebago County, Wisconsin
- October 23, 1869 - Applied for a pension (Application #149,543)
- December 12, 1905 - Died in Oshkosh, Wisconsin
- Buried at Riverside Cemetery in Oshkosh, Wisconsin
- September 13, 1909 - After Thomas died, his widow applied for a pension from Wisconsin (Application #927,002)
