The Gettysburg Campaign

The Gettysburg Campaign was a series of military engagements in the Eastern Theater of the War from June 3-August 1, 1863. After his victory at the Battle of Chancellorsville, Confederate General Robert E. Lee moves his forces north in a massive raid designed to obtain desperately needed supplies, to undermine civilian morale in the North, and to encourage anti-war elements. Lee takes the action from Virginia, through Maryland, and into Pennsylvania, where his army is repulsed and manages to slip back south. This campaign represents a great turning point in the eastern theater and indeed the war itself, as Northern forces regroup and drive further and further south towards Richmond for the remainder of the war.

  • Many Union troops "joined" campaign later
  • Campaign is not on several unit homepages, probably taken from surrounding areas
