The Gettysburg Campaign (Day 51/60)
|
Confederate General Robert E. Lee moves his forces north in a massive raid designed to obtain desperately needed supplies, to undermine civilian morale in the North, and to encourage anti-war elements. Lee takes the action from Virginia, through Maryland, and into Pennsylvania, where his army is repulsed and manages to slip back south. This campaign represents a great turning point in the eastern theater and indeed the war itself, as Northern forces regroup and drive further and further south towards Richmond for the remainder of the war (June 3-August 1, 1863)
