- Prominent and highly regarded Milwaukee lawyer and former Attorney General
- Commissioned from Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin
- No real military knowledge or experience, widely seen as a political appointment by Governor Randall
War Career
- April 24, 1861 - Received commission as Colonel
- June 11, 1861 - Mustered into federal service with unit
- Named the Madison mustering location "Camp Randall" after his appointment
- Named to personal staff of William Tecumseh Sherman
- July 31, 1861 - Resigned commission
Post-War Career
- Died on October 12, 1883 in Milwaukee.[1]
- Buried at Section 26, Forest Home Cemetery, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
