Antebellum

- Walked from native North Carolina to Indiana
- Served in Wayne County as sheriff, legislator, and U.S. Marshal, and was serving as Wayne County Clerk when Sumter was fired upon
- Political crony of Indiana Governor Oliver Morton
- Delegate supporting Lincoln at Republican convention at Chicago, Illinois in 1860
- Left Camp Morton on smaller 2nd train with 2 of his favorite horses
- Stormed through train cars demanding to know who was shooting valuable livestock ("Rebel" ducks and chickens along railroad tracks) after 19th left Baltimore
War Career
- Received his commission as Colonel on July 29, 1861
- Black horse
- Promoted to Brigadier of U.S. Volunteers on October 6, 1862
