VIRGINIA
The Manassas Campaign (Day 6/6)
(July 16-21, 1861)
Battle of Bull Run, Virginia
- Irvin Mcdowell's Army of Northeastern Virginia faces off against the Confederate Armies of the Potomac and the Shenandoah (commanded by Brigadier General Joseph E, Johnston) for the first time. Confusion and chaos quickly unravel a near-certain Union victory, resulting in disaster for the Union forces and a great panic in Washington, D.C. The Union's Manassas Campaign is unsuccessful and in the following days many officers resign or are dismissed from service. The Union records 470 killed, 1,071 wounded, and 1,792 captured and missing, a total of 3,334 casualties.
