Antebellum
- Born March 16, 1828 in Wayne County, Pennsylvania
- Family moved to Wisconsin in 1840 around the area of Prairie du Chien
- Started to read law at 18
- Admitted to bar at 29
- One of "founders" of new Republican party, at Madison Convention of September 5, 1855
- Elected District Attorney for Juneau County, Wisconsin in 1860, resigned to enlist
War Career
- Enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant of the 6th Wisconsin Infantry / Company K on May 3, 1861
- Promoted to Captain of the 6th Wisconsin Infantry / Company I on December 12, 1861
- Taken prisoner on May 5, 1864
- Promoted to Major of the 6th Wisconsin Infantry on September 1, 1864
- Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of the 6th Wisconsin Infantry on October 19, 1864
- Promoted to Brevet Brigadier General of United States Volunteers on April 9, 1865
- Mustered out on July 14, 1865
Postwar Career
Family
- Father was tavern keeper, stage proprietor, and general contractor
- Grandfather served in Revolutionary War
