Department of the Shenandoah
From Warriors of the Rebellion
Jump to navigationJump to searchThe Department of the Shenandoah was a Union Military Department constituted on July 19, 1861 to consist of the Valley of Virginia, the counties of Washington and Allegany in Maryland, and such parts of Virginia as may be covered by the army in its operations. In Frederick Dyer's Compendium of the War of the Rebellion, this army is often referred to as "Banks' Division" rather than the army itself, possibly in anticipation of expanding the department. It was discontinued on August 17, 1861 and merged into the Department of the Potomac. It was recreated on April 4, 1862 and merged into the Army of Virginia on June 26, 1862.
