The Compendium of the Confederate Armies series was published by Facts on File in 1995. Author Stewart Sifakis wrote the 10-volume series as a Confederate companion series to Frederick Dyer's Compendium of the War of the Rebellion, which included only information on units serving in the Union. The first nine volumes are devoted to individual states or groups of two. The tenth volume covers the border states of Kentucky, Maryland and Missouri, Indian units serving the Confederacy, and multi-state units designated as Confederate Regular Army Units. Its lists for each unit, when known:
- Organizational information (including the date and place of the unit's organization, muster-in, reorganization and final disposition - disbandment or surrender)
- The name of the regiment's first colonel, the battalion's first commander, or in the case of artillery battalions, the first captain
- An alphabetical listing of all field officers of the command and their ranks
- Higher assignments of the unit
- A complete listing of the campaigns, battles, and skirmishes in which the unit was engaged (with dates)
- Further reading suggestions of unit histories and personal memoirs
