Battle of Belmont, Missouri - Union forces under Ulysses Grant engage Confederate forces under Major General Leonidas Polk at Belmont in Mississippi County, Missouri on November 7, 1861. Because Grant attacked and withdrew, the Confederates considered this a victory for the South.
