- Enlisted on April 21, 1861 in the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry / (I) Company K
- Promoted to Captain on April 30, 1861
- Wounded at the Battle of (I) Bull Run
- Hesitant to continue war service when the state began to register 3 year units, fearing for his (and partners') business prospects, decided to continue in the spirit of patriotism[1]
- Transferred to the 1st Wisconsin Heavy Artillery / Battery A on December 8, 1861 pursuant to General Orders #78
