Regimental History and Service Record
Organized as "Birge's Western Sharpshooters (U)" at St. Louis, Mo. Mustered in as 14th Infantry November 23, 1861. Attached to Dept. of Missouri to February, 1862. 4th Brigade, 2nd Division, Military District of Cairo, February, 1862. 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, Army of the Tennessee, to July, 1862. 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, District of Corinth, Miss., to November, 1862.
SERVICE.--Moved to Centralia, Mo., December 12-14, 1861. Skirmishes with Bushwhackers December 14-28. Capture of Columbia December 26. Battle of Mt. Zion December 28. Moved to Sturgeon December 29. Scouting about Renick, Macon and Centralia until February 4, 1862. Moved to St. Louis, Mo., thence to Cairo, Ill., Paducah, Ky., and Fort Henry, Tenn., February 4-9. Investment and capture of Fort Donelson February 12-16. Duty at Fort Donelson until March 5. Moved to Metal Landing, Tennessee River, thence to Savannah and Pittsburg Landing, Tenn., March 5-17.

Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee
Advance on and siege of Corinth, Miss., April 29-May 30. Occupation of Corinth May 30 and pursuit to Booneville June 1-3. Duty at Headquarters of General Grant until August 25, and Provost duty at Corinth. Scout to Bethel August 28-30. Expedition to Glendale and Iuka September 18-21. Battle of Iuka September 19. Battle of White House and Corinth October 3-4. Pursuit to the Hatchie River October 5-12. Hatchie River October 9. Scout to Hatchie River November 2-5.
- November 20, 1862 - Regiment transferred to Illinois as 66th Illinois Infantry
