Units from Arkansas (Union)

Units from Arkansas (Confederate)

Troops from Arkansas were transferred almost immediately to Confederate States Service after its secession, with the exception of the State Troops. These units were organized in June 1861, and although several fought alongside the Confederate States armies at Wilson's Creek on August 10, 1861, they were disbanded in September without being transferred to Confederate States Service. Because many areas of the state were overrun by Union troops early in the war, no Local Defense Troops or Reserve units were formed.

Arkansas units are confusing to document. Many of the early units were sent east of the Mississippi River, and new units raised afterwards were given the same numerical designations but kept in the Western Theater. These "Trans-Mississippi" units also changed designations when new colonels took command, so many of the "nicknames" of these units were actual designations used in dispatches.

In addition to these peculiarities, the state's artillery batteries did not receive numerical designations until November 19, 1864.

Note that because of the confusing nature of Arkansas's units, the regiment histories often contain inconsistent information as well.
